Ceramic Coating Insulating Properties

What’s the difference between normal insulation with R-Value compared to ceramic coatings and why do ceramic coatings prove to have increased benefits beyond providing energy reduction?

Simply stated, “R” Value is the measurement of how a material absorbs and holds heat before it can transfer through the material. The ASTM R Value test was designed to be performed at 75 degrees and provide measurement values that would be meaningful. However, the ASTM test does not account for air movement, variable temperatures above or below 75 degrees or moisture. So if fiberglass insulation is assigned an R Value, it can only achieve this R Value if tested in an absolute zero wind, no moisture environment and at 75 degrees -not a real world environment.

Given its ability to absorb moisture, effects by air movement and possible compression to less than optimum thickness, standard insulation material is compromised along with its original R Value rating. Equally important, the R Value Test is for conduction only, and does not account for energy emitted by radiation and heat transfer by convection. Heat comes from different sources and by different methods of transmission. The repelling of radiated heat (emissivity), the reflecting (reflectivity) of convective heat and the resistance to the migration of conductive heat (thermal conductivity) with any substrate must be considered to fully realize maximum energy savings.

Fiberglass breathes the air containing moisture into the air pockets and holds this moisture causing the surface of walls to become corroded in a short period of time, often causing black mold - an environmental health hazard. Condensation on vapor barriers is also a known problem which creates mold and mildew on walls and substrate surfaces.

The understanding that heat comes in several different forms is the reason ceramic coatings provide a very unique reaction to effectively respond to each heat source. Ceramic compounds do not absorb heat but in fact fends off heat in a manner similar to reflection. Again Ceramic Coatings are not affected identically when compared to regular insulation from exposure to moisture, wind or compression and therefore will not reduce its effectiveness as documented in ASTM testing of ceramic coatings.

Unlike fiberglass, which demands a vapor barrier to protect it, Ceramic Coating products provide their own vapor barrier. In fact, a Ceramic Coating is a monolithic and waterproof system - it has no seams to pull apart or split, eliminating the problem of moisture contamination, dry rot, mildew and black mold. And, with the elastomeric properties, will expand and contract with the building during temperature changes, providing a waterproof system and helping to conserve energy.

Documented results of Ceramic Coatings, when tested to ASTM 236 Methods (Standard Test Method for Steady-State Thermal Performance of Building Assemblies by Means of a Guarded Hot Box) provide remarkable results proving increased insulation property and additional benefits when compared to common insulation. When tested, Ceramic Coatings improved the performance of fiberglass insulation by 40% according to lab testing.

Primary heat transfer by nature always takes place vertically with hot air moving in an upward direction and cold air moving to lower levels. Providing insulation by means of ceramic coatings addresses the main source of heat energy by conduction, radiation and convection with multiple benefits of energy savings, prolonged HVAC Equipment Life and an environmental improvement to the work space and atmosphere.

Please Note: The above information is provided from public record and actual documented testing by accredited laboratories to clearly demonstrate the benefits of ceramic coatings when compared to normal insulation practice and materials. This information is not intended to promote any ceramic coating product.
